Kate and Petruchio

A three piece band and a tenor singing hits from the early 50’s like “Mambo Italiano” and “Satin Doll” set the mood for a night of laughter and flirting with Theatre Under the Trees’ nineteenth summer production, The Taming of the Shrew. Staging Shrew as simply as possible with hints of the Bogart, Bacall, and Sinatra Rat Pack era, Theatre Under the Trees puts Shakespeare’s lively story of two sisters in its original frame as a play performed by a traveling troupe of actors, upping the farce with pratfalls and lightning quick comic timing.

One of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies, The Taming of the Shrew is full of banter, wit, scheming servants, and lovers bold in disguise. Centered around Katherine Minola, one of theatre’s greatest heroines, audiences will enjoy an evening of high friction flirting. Watch Kate tear through her sister’s suitors until Petruchio bravely strides forward to win her hand and heart.

This year, The Taming of the Shrew opens on July 21 at Gifford Pinchot State Park and makes its rounds among many other local parks. Bring a blanket and some friends and come to a park nearest you. All performances are free, but donations are graciously accepted. Please bring a blanket, chair and picnic basket, if you like.
