This fall, DreamWrights presents a double feature of original storytelling — five shows, one unforgettable evening.

The New Fable Festival brings together short, original plays by local playwrights, each featuring animal characters and crafted to reflect DreamWrights’ spirit of inclusive, intergenerational community theatre.

Mother Goosed by Jason Pizzarello rounds out the evening with a laugh-out-loud comedy where something’s gone terribly wrong in the world of nursery rhymes, and Mother Goose is on a mission to fix it! Familiar fairy tales and favorite characters collide in one fast-paced adventure — perfect for kids and kids-at-heart.

The New Fable Festival features four original short fables:

Bee Out of the Box by Sadie Jarmer — Honey is a bee who doesn’t like making honey. With help from her best friend Sting, she tries out different jobs in the hive to find one that fits her, and discovers she’s meant to think outside the box.

When the Bell Rings by David Schoenfeld — Thomas the Turkey becomes convinced the farmer’s bell will soon ring for him and begins preparing for the end. With help from his barnyard friends, he learns that life is too precious to spend waiting for the bell, and that the future may be uncertain but today is still ours to enjoy.

The Three Little Pigs and the Bid Bag Wolf by Alan Dudley — This play is Romeo and Juliet meets The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf. Borrowing from Shakespeare, folk tales, and some classic children’s films, it follows what happens when Polly Pig meets Peter Wolf while her parents shop for a new house at the Bid Bag Wolf Home Construction Company.

The Stolen Jewels of the Capybara Kingdom, written by DreamWrights campers from the Once Upon a Twist: Fractured Fable Writing camp — The royal capybara children sneak off to play, and a smooth talking stranger convinces them to trade the crown jewels for their lost ball. When the theft is discovered, the wrong people take the blame.

Featured Gallery:

Running alongside Mother Goosed and the New Fable Festival, the gallery exhibit Creatures BIG & small is on display September 4 through October 2, opening First Friday, September 4. From the smallest firefly to a colorful flock of geese, the exhibit celebrates the animals, natural world, and imaginative creatures that inspire us to look more closely at the world around us. At the heart of the exhibit is the work of artist Adañ Torres, alongside a flock of colorful geese made by the cast and crew of Mother Goosed and fireflies created by DreamWrights summer campers. Some are BIG. Some are small. Some are real. Some exist only because we imagined them. All of them have a story to tell.
