To Audition

Wear comfortable clothing. Prepare to read one of the provided sides and potentially two characters. You may be called in based on character pairings or called in to read alone.

What to Prepare

Actors should select one monologue from the “Audition Selections” below that corresponds to the character track that they are most interested in.

Expectations: You will only perform one monologue for your initial audition. However, please familiarize yourself with both characters in your chosen track, as the casting team may ask you to read a few lines from the contrasting act.

Specific Director Instructions
Do not try to play “the theme” of the play. Focus on the immediate, desperate needs of the characters.

For Act I (1959) characters, consider the social contexts of the era, with heightened racial and political tensions following a war. For Act II characters, focus on the sharp, overlapping rhythm of modern debate and the empowerment and progress of Black Americans, while still living under the cloud of ongoing racial and social tensions.

Prepare for Callbacks

Callbacks will take place on Thursday September 3 from 5:30 pm – 7 pm. Callbacks may read opposite other characters. Callback Selection will be given during callbacks.
