Directing RENT: School Edition at DreamWrights is coming full circle for guest Director Davina Lopez. It was the first show she saw on Broadway and is what made her fall in love with musical theater and being on stage. She’s been in RENT twice, and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to direct it, especially with teens.

“Having young open minds that are eager to learn and experience RENT early is such a great opportunity,” Lopez said.

This Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical will hit the DreamWrights main stage June 13-23 featuring teens age 13-18, and Lopez said the talent of these teens will blow the audience away.

Lopez has also spent time educating the teens about issues like homelessness in the late 80s, HIV/AIDS and the Stonewall Riots. Vinny Cannizzaro, Glatfelter Public Policy Fellow, also spoke to the company about homelessness and transgender issues and a study he recently did in Red Lion.

“Having such an open-minded cast not afraid to speak their truth is uplifting,” Lopez said. “I hope people come see the show with an open mind and heart. I hope they leave embracing love, unconditionally.”

Lopez believes the show fits perfectly into DreamWrights’ season theme “Celebrating Life.”

“It’s about taking advantage of each day, living life to its fullest and having no regrets,” she said. “It’s about people living with integrity, values, self-worth, and trying to maintain who they are without forgetting that. In almost every song of RENT, you hear a recurring theme of life or living for today.”
