What do you get when a runaway bride finds herself in the middle of a blizzard knocking at the door of a recluse’s cabin in Alaska? It’s not the opening of a bad joke, and you’ll have to come see Brilliant Traces at DreamWrights Center for Community Arts to find out.
Brilliant Traces, the next up in the studio series at DreamWrights, runs Oct. 3-6 starring two actors who have gone from audition to opening night in under one month. Directed by Andrea Unger, it stars Kirk Wisler and Catie Dinneen in its main and only roles.
It’s a story about “damaged souls,” Unger said. And how “it’s only through our connections with other human beings that we are able to survive the heartbreak we will each, inevitably, experience.”
Aside from the quick turnaround from reading to the stage, Unger said the process has been exciting and challenging for her team and the actors. From the setup, a runaway bride from Arizona making it to an Alaskan cabin, to the script itself, the whole thing is quite odd, she said with a laugh. There’s a lot happening in a short span of days for the characters, moving through a wide range of emotions, she went on to say.
The show runs 90 minutes without intermission with performances scheduled for Oct. 3, 4 & 5 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. Advance tickets are $15 for general admission and can be purchased online at DreamWrights.org. Tickets purchased at the door are $17. Refreshments are available for purchase prior to the show.
The theme for DreamWrights’ 2019 season is “Celebrating Life,” and Unger believes the play fits in well.
“By baring their painful pasts to each other, they begin the process of healing, of becoming whole,” she said. “While the overall feeling of the play is not celebratory in any way, emotional scars and pain are a part of every life. Healing allows us to continue on, and that is worth celebrating!”
